Ford Taurus Won't Downshift

Q. Hi, I recently installed an automatic transmission into a 1991 Ford Taurus and after I got it all hooked up and took it for a test drive, when I slow down, it is like it doesn't shift back down to first gear and then it dies, sometimes when I slow down very slowly it will kind of putt and then it shifts to first.

I don't know what is wrong, and I've been looking around asking questions and I was just wondering if you've got some advice.

Thanks for all your help.
Matt

A. A downshift problem like this can be traced to an internal problem with the transmission. I don't know if you put a rebuilt transmission or a used transmission in, but in either case I would suspect a low-intermediate servo problem since this is what controls the downshift. I would have this confirmed by a transmission shop before I go and tear it out again.
