Jeep Cherokee Power Antenna

Q. Problem Background: I was turning off radio and bump caused to repeat switch depression. This had caused the antenna motor to continuously run with the antenna remaining in the extended position. Since the radio power button also closes the antenna motor circuit and the radio does play, I suspect their is a motion stop or limit switch that is not receiving its input which is the retracting or extending antenna.

Jeep Cherokee Power Antenna

When the radio power switch is turned on, the motor rotates in one direction; when radio power switch turned off, motor rotates in opposite direction. This was determined through listening to the difference in audible motor pitch. 1991 Jeep Cherokee.

Question is:

  1. What type of drive translates the telescoping antenna?
  2. From this, is the antenna mechanically disconnected from drive or is the problem with motor stop or limit switch?

Regards,
Andy

A. Since you can hear the antenna motor running in both directions, I think it's safe to assume the motor is good.

The antenna mast has a plastic "gear" the is attached to the top segment of the antenna mast. When the motor runs it pulls this plastic gear in or out, either retracting or extending the antenna mast.

It is common for this plastic gear to strip or break. Fortunately it is possible to replace just the antenna mast. You can get a new antenna mast from the dealer for about $10.00 and most times they will put it in for you for free or a nominal fee.
