Isuzu Rodeo Blinking Headlights

Q. Hi, I own a 1996 Isuzu Rodeo LS 3.2 liter fuel injected V-6, automatic transmission, 95,000 miles, ABS brakes, P/S and Cruise control. Recently the headlights started to just turn off while driving. The park lights and dash lights all stay lit, just the head lights blink out, including high beams.

Sometimes they come back on for a few minutes, but it does not seem related to hitting bumps or anything. The dealer says they have to be out to diagnose, but every time I think they are out, they start working again before I can get it in for a diagnosis. I have had the alternator and battery checked and they are fine.

Everything else electrical seems fine. If it sits a while they will always come back on when I flip the switch. I also had the switch checked and it is fine. Please help, it is very dangerous.

A. This will be a tough one to find. As your dealer said, it can only be checked when they are not working.

There is some hope however. Since they ALL go out at the same time, we can narrow down the possibilities.

As you can see in the diagram, power goes into the headlight relay and then to the fuse box where it splits to the two headlights. And since power goes through the headlight relay coil and to the lighting switch, that would keep the dash lights on.

So that narrows it down to a bad headlight relay or the wiring between the headlight relay and the fuse box. What you can do is try swapping a the same relay for something else with the headlight relay and see if the problem goes away.
