CJ-7 Inline Fuel Pump Problem

Q. Hi Vincent. I read your article on How to Change Your Electric Fuel Pump and I'm wondering if you can help me out a bit. I have an 1982 Jeep CJ-7 with a 4.0 liter from a 2000 Cherokee installed. I couldn't track down a tank with the fuel rail (pump & regulator) inside (at least not one that would fit between the leaf springs), so I've got an inline pump installed back by the old tank and a high performance regulator up in the engine compartment.

This set up works pretty well, but one problem I'm having is that the fuel bleeds back into the tank when I turn off the engine. Before starting, I need to "prime" the pump by turning the key on-off, on-off about 10 times (without cranking), or more when it's hot (vaporized fuel is my guess, as the line runs kind of close to the muffler).

Do you know of an in-line check-valve that I could install to solve this problem? Or, is there a high performance fuel filter with one built in? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Robb

A. All inline electric fuel pumps have a check valve. So, if yours is losing pressure when you shut it off, you either have a bad fuel pressure regulator or a bad fuel pump.
