Replacing Tercel T/S Switch

Q. In my 1987 Toyota Tercel Liftback, the right turn signal operates and cancels properly. Flashers operate properly. Left turn signal will operate only on momentary. When left is pushed down into lock position, signals stop operating.

Indicator cancels properly. What's up? If there is a switch on column can it be replaced by reasonably handy non mechanic?

A. The turn signal switch is located inside the steering column and iIt does require removing the steering wheel. If you are comfortable with that, replacing the turn signal switch is fairly easy.

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove steering wheel and upper and lower steering column covers.
  2. Disconnect hazard and turn signal switch connector, then using a small screwdriver, disengage hazard and turn signal switch wiring from combination switch connector. Note position of wires.
  3. Remove screws, clamp, hazard and turn signal switch assembly from combination switch.
  4. Reverse procedure to install.

And that's it. takes about an hour to do.
