Camry Belt Slapping

Q. Hi, I have a 1998 Toyota Camry LE. It is a V-4 automatic. Recently I have been hearing a rattling noise under the hood at all times, mostly when idle. Sounds like a belt. Is it possible that this is a problem with the water pump and timing belt?

I am planning on a trip this Friday from NYC to VT (approximately 200 miles) and wanted to know if it is something I should definitely get serviced before I go or if it can wait.

Thanks.

A. Well, it's either a straight 4 or a V-6 but I'll go on the assumption it's a 4 cylinder.

The fluttering/rumble noise you hear is common to 4 cylinder Camry's. What you probably hear is the timing belt slapping against the timing cover. If you raise the idle slowly and the fluttering goes away at about 1,200 rpm, it's definitely the timing belt and should be replaced. If the belt breaks while the engine is running, you will do severe damage to the engine.

The belt can become loose due to stretching and old age or because of water pump bearing wear. It makes good sense to replace the timing belt and water pump at the same time on this engine regardless of whether the pump is good or not. You can expect to pay about four hours labor for the timing belt and if the water pump is also done, an additional one hour for it. Replacement of engine belts and thermostat should also be done at this time.
