Can't Shut Off Ford Contour Heater

Q. I have a 1995 Ford Contour GL. When heat and air is off, hot air blows onto your calves still. I have been told, by an unreliable source that it is the blend door actuator. Everybody I have spoken to has quoted me at least $500.00 and that does not even include the diagnostic fees starting at $70.00.

Can't Shut Off Ford Contour Heater

I read your response about the blend door in the 1995 Ford Windstar. Is it possible it is just the fuse in our car? If so what is the fuse that needs replacement? Please respond as quickly as possible I live some place where the weather climbs into the 100s and I have two children and am six months pregnant. Please help!

Thank you,
Renee

A. I wish it were something as simple as a fuse Renee, but the system is vacuum operated. But it is possible the vacuum motor or the vacuum line going to it is bad.

I would suggest you looking under the dash because you should be able to see the vacuum motors, but I don't think that's advisable in your condition. Maybe your husband can look to see if the motors move and that there is vacuum getting to them. Some can be easily replaced without taking the whole heater box out and some do require the heater box to come out to be replaced.

If this happens while the vehicle is moving, then it is possible that air coming in through the air intake is the reason for this. Try putting the system in RECIRC and see if it stops. If it does, then it's normal and there is nothing to fix.
