Mustang Rag Top

Q. I have a 1994 Mustang GT convertible. 8 cylinder, 302 cid., automatic transmission with 109,500 miles. EFI, ABS, P/S, and A/C. The motor for raising and lowering the convertible top has a problem lately.

The motor performs as it always has when lowering, but, when raising the top, the motor struggles very much, and just doesn't have the power to return the top to the closed position, as before.

Is there any maintenance required on this motor? What could cause this "bogging down" of the motor when closing the top?

Please help! This warm weather has me in the "windblown" mood, and I sincerely appreciate any answers you can provide.

Thanks!!
Mitch

A. There are two possibilities Mitch, either the hydraulic fluid is low or the motor for the pump is going bad.

To check the fluid level remove the filler plug located on the right side of the pump/motor assembly and check the fluid level. It should be level with the bottom of the filler plug hole. If fluid appears excessively low, check for leaks or restrictions in the hydraulic lines, loose or broken fittings, and/or damaged cylinders.

If the fluid level is okay, then you're looking at a bad pump/motor assembly. The convertible top motor is located behind the bottom center of the rear seat. The operating pressure can be tested with a special tester. This is not something that I suggest you do because the operating pressure can exceed 2000 psi.
