Quest Has No Reverse
Q. We are thinking about buying a 1995 Nissan Quest Minivan, and are in possible need of a automatic transmission for it. The major problem with the transmission is that it will not go in REVERSE, and otherwise the gearshift moves as it is supposed to. Could it be the reverse gear valve that just needs replaced or the whole transmission?
Please respond as soon as possible.
A. It is possible that the transmission doesn't need to be replaced. There are some external causes that would keep it from shifting into reverse.
First things to check would be the fluid level and shift linkage. Then from there it could be one of the shift solenoid valves, line pressure valve or valve body itself. If all of these check out, then we're looking at internal transmission problems.
I always advise my customers who are looking at a car with known problems, especially transmission problems to walk away from it. There are too many other cars around to buy without any major problems.
If you have your heart set on this van, and it is a very nice Van, I would take it to a Nissan dealer first and have them check it out and find out exactly what it needs and what it will cost to repair. Then you can go back to the seller and come to a price agreement, taking into account the repair cost.
