Firebird Code 34

Q. Hi, my car is being a real pain in the neck. 1986 Pontiac Firebird 2.8 liter V-6, 140,000 miles. First of all, its been sitting for a long time and I knew it was going need work but, it was my first car (that I never got to drive legally).

Anyways, it has sat for about five years and now all the legal stuff has been straightened out so I could title it and drive; but I have some major problems.

I replace the fuel pump and the spark plugs and it didn't help. So I was working on it one day and I was ready to drive it. It was idling fine got it out on a dirt road and the engine light came on and when I gave it the gas it started to crack and pop and backfire through the intake.

I checked the codes and code 34 came up well I have two other cars with MPI so I changed the MAF out and it didn't help at all. I even have changed the computer and still nothing. Could the computer be wrong or do I need to break down and buy a brand new MAF? But if it don't work I can't take it back either. Is there any way I can test the sensor?

A. If you can get access to a Chiltons service manual, either buy one or borrow one from the local public library, there will be a test for the MAF sensor. You may need to get it scanned to help in diagnosis.
