Volkawagen Jetta Coolant Lose
Q. Hello, I have a question. I have a 1990 Volkawagen Jetta GLI 2.0 liter. My question is why my car uses so much antifreeze? If I pour antifreeze at the maximum line, in about twenty minutes it will be a little below the minimum line. I know that is not normal. I don't see any leaks at all. I even took it to a shop, and they told me It did not leak anything.
They took a thermometer and ranged to 160 to 170 degrees f. Can you tell me the possibilities what is wrong.
Thank for your help.
A. No, that is not normal. What's getting me is the speed with which it goes low. My first inclination is to think bad head gasket, but in order to burn that much anti=freeze in that short of time, you would have very noticeable white smoke coming out of the exhaust. Even a leak would leave a very noticeable trail.
I don't know what to tell you here. Coolant either leaks out or is burned in the engine, there is no third possibility.
What I would try is to put a pressure tester on the car while the engine is running. If a leak develops or white smoke appears, you'll have your answer.
