Nissan 240SX Head Gasket Q. Hi, I have a 1990 Nissan 240SX with a KA24E engine that has 79,000 miles. Today a friend noticed white smoke coming from the exhaust while following me on the freeway. Once he told me what he saw, I stood behind the car and had him rev it up and sure enough white smoke came out when reved to 5,000 rpm @ idle.

I drove the car home but didn't notice any smoke on the way.

If it is a cylinder head gasket problem like my research indicated how much am I looking at in repair costs in the San Francisco Bay Area?

A. Cost depends on what kind of problems are found. If the job goes well without any problem, it'll run about 7 hours labor, head gasket kit is about $50.00 to $75.00 depending on brand. I recommend using Nissan parts. Sending out the cylinder head to be pressure tested and resurfaced, about $75.00 to $100.00. Incidentals like new anti-freeze, oil and filter will run about another $50.00 or so.

Now this are ballpark figures. A lot depends on your area of the country and what the local labor rates are.
