Cavalier Clutch Problem

Q. Sir, I have a 1997 Chevy Cavalier coupe. 2.2 liter, manual 5 speed. It has about 68,000 miles on it. The clutch pedal has slowly but surely been recoiling less and less, it doesn't come up as far after I push it in, and lately has gotten so bad.

My car is being shipped here from overseas so I can't have it checked out, so I was wondering what you think the problem may be so I could address it and have everything ready for when it gets here? Lately, I will have to pump the clutch before it will go into gear without grinding. And unless I sit and pump it like 80 times, the clutch pedal will just stick to the ground after I push it down. It does not even start engaging unless I keep pumping it before I try and put my car in gear.

Thank you very much for your time.
David

A. This is a hydraulic clutch system. It uses brake fluid to transfer your foot on pedal to actually pushing the clutch in. Possibly you have a leak in the clutch master cylinder or the slave cylinder. You can start by checking the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder which should be just next to the brake master cylinder mounted on the firewall under the hood. If it's empty, pour some brake fluid in it and put the lid back on. Start pumping to see if you get a pedal. Sounds like you're going to need one of these two cylinders.
