BMW 528i Door Lock Actuators
Q. Dear Vince, Hi, I am having problem with my BMW 528i Model 1996 (E39) as under. First, the driver side door lock (left) started to give me problem by not opening through the remote built in the key. However, manually I can still open it (by inserting the key). Later, the right hand side front passenger door locked normally around a week ago but I am unable to open it now when I unlock the car.
Even from the button inside the car for central locking or even if I pull the "door open" lever of that door while sitting inside.
My question is: what can be wrong in these door locks and more important question is "can I do it myself'" . the mechanic says that the actuators inside have failed and have to be replaced. Plus a lot of money for labor. Can you guide me with the methodology how to open the panels inside of the door and how to look in the problem. Can I repair these actuators or they HAVE to be replaced. I will give myself 4-5 points on a scale of 10.
Another problem is that the ABS sensor in the front right wheel has developed some insulation cracks in the piece of wiring which goes from the body to the wheel and sometimes the ABS & ASC light indicators come on during driving if the wheel goes in sudden bump or something. Although It goes off when I restart my car.
The small sensor and wiring is costing me more than a 100.00. Can you guide me how to take it out, repair the wiring and replace it back. You have helped me a lot in recent past and I am sure I will get a nice descriptive answer to this one as well.
Thanks...
A. The actuators are not that hard to replace. The trick is getting to them. Here's how:
![]()
- Unfasten screw (1) in air duct.
- If necessary lift out foot well light (2) and remove connector.
Version with seat memory:
- If necessary, lift out memory switch (3) and remove connector.

- Remove toggle switch (1) for side window operation.
- Lift out seal cap (2) and unfasten screw.
![]()
- Unclip door trim panel all around.
- Pull door trim upwards out of door clip and slide door handle (1) through the door trim panel.

- Remove door clip

Once the door panel is off, it will be obvious how the actuators come off. There's no repair, they can only be replaced. The rear door panel comes off almost the same as the front door panels.
If it is only minor cracks in the ABS sensor wire, I would tape it up real good with electrical tape and see if that takes care of it. If it does, you're set. If not you'll have to replace the sensor.
