Parts And Time Guides

Q. Dear Vince, Where can I find the repair labor hour book for Saturn? It should be public information and anyone can see it, right?

Thanks,
Jona

A. The parts and labor time guides are no big secret, anyone can purchase one. Motor Manuals and Chilton both publish these guides. They are not cheap, often costing up to several hundred dollars, but if one wants to spend the money, one can buy them from almost any large bookstore.

There is no specific parts and labor time guide for one make of car, all the time guides include all makes and models of cars and light trucks. So you will not find one for just Saturns. The only place where you can get specific labor times for a particular car is from Alldata. You can buy a yearly subscription for about $25.00 a year. That includes all the repair information, TSBs and parts and labor times for that make and model.

If you use it to check up on the mechanic who is working on your car, you should be aware that these are guides for estimating only. The guides do not take into account all possible scenarios involved in a certain repair. And in some cases the times do not accurately reflect the actual time it does take to do a job, most notably Ford heater core replacement.
