Toyota Camry Speedometer

Q. I recently just got done swapping my old 3SFE engine with an imported low mileage 3SFE engine of the same year and I noticed that my speedometer is not working. A The needle just sits at zero mph. The car has been setting for the last six months that may have something to do with it.

The wiring seems right unless there's something that I forgot to connect, also I was thinking maybe it has something to do with how I connected the CV joint housing to the transmission. I've looked in my factory repair manual for my car and I can't seem to find anything on diagnosing this problem. I'd appreciate the help thanks a lot.

A. I had the same exact problem when I put a used 2.o liter in my girlfriends 1987 Toyota Camry. What happened was I forgot to reconnect the speedometer cable. Did you reconnect the speedometer cable?

There is an upper and lower cable. If it is connected then you need to remove it from the transmission and chuck the end in a drill and spin it (drill in reverse). If the needle moves you have a broken pinion or counter gear.

If not, then I would replace both speedometer cables.
