240 SX Cruise Control
Q. Hello Vincent, I recently purchased a 1995 Nissan 240SX SE 2.4 liter coupe. It has an automatic transmission and does not have an ABS system. The car just hit 54,000 miles and has a factory cruise control system installed. However, I bought the car with a non-functioning cruise control system.
After the cruise control is enabled by a main switch under the speedometer/tachometer display, I attempt to set the cruise control speed with the appropriate "set" button on the steering wheel. I have attempted this many times on the highway at speeds ranging from 40 to 70 miles per hour. The car does not maintain the cruise control speed even though it indicates it is operating with a "CRUISE" light. The car does not seem to catch the set speed and immediately slows down after I remove my foot from the accelerator.
After slowing down about 10 mph - 15 mph after engaging the "set" switch on the steering wheel, the automatic transmission seems like it downshifts, the engine revs higher for a split second, and then cruise control shuts off entirely (the light goes out). What could be wrong with the cruise control system?

A. The most likey cause is a mis-adjusted ASCD wire. It is easy enough to adjust and it should be adjusted before any other troubleshooting is done. Here's how to do it:
CAUTION:
- Be careful not to twist Automatic Speed Control Device (ASCD) wire when removing it.
- Do not tense ASCD wire excessively during adjustment. Adjust the tension of ASCD wire in the following manner.
- Loosen lock nut and adjusting nut.
- Make sure that accelerator wire is properly adjusted.
- Tighten adjusting nut just until throttle drum starts to move.
- Loosen adjusting nut again 1/2 to 1 turn.
- Tighten lock nut.
I'm pretty sure that will fix the problem for you.
