Bug Won't Stop
Q. 1974 Volkswagon Bug, manual transmission. The problem is the brakes. The pedal goes down half way and is hard at that point but does not stop the car. First I adjusted the brakes and bled the lines with no change. The pads and drums were fine but I replaced them anyway. I thought maybe it was the master cylinder so I replaced it. Re-bled the lines three times but nothing.
I have no pedal it just goes down half way and is hard there, even when I bleed the lines. I don't have any travel in the pedal they won't pump up to the top just hard right at the half way point. I am kind of lost here maybe you could give me some advice.
Thank you,
MikeA. It could be a couple of things. One is the wheel cylinders are bad or, more likely, the calipers are frozen. Pinch off the front brake lines. Step on the brakes and if the pedal is now high and firm, you have bad calipers.
