Mercury Cougar Climate Control
Q. I have a 1991 Mercury Cougar, 3.8 V-6, air, automatic transmission, fuel injected, 120,000 miles. The climate control is stuck on defrost. I was running on A/C and suddenly the air would switch from vent to floor and then to defrost. It did this off and on for a while, and then went to defrost and stayed there.
When I push the A/C button the compressor kicks in, and when I switch to floor, the compressor turns off like it is supposed to, so it appears as though the electrical part is working. I pulled the panel out of the dash and checked the vacuum lines but am unable to determine if that is where my problem is. I would appreciate any help I can get.
Thank You.
A. When there is a failure in the ATC the system will default to the defrost mode as a fail safe. The control assembly will detect and display system errors that occur during normal operation.
To get the codes:
- Turn ignition switch to ON position.
- Press FLOOR.
- Set blower control to HI position.
- Press COOL and WARM simultaneously for three seconds.
The display will go blank and the blower will stop, indicating the self test is proceeding. After 20 seconds one or more codes will appear.
To terminate the self test mode at any time, press the OFF button. To erase stored codes, press and hold the COOL button for three seconds.
When you get the code(s) let me know what they are and we can go from there.
