Hard Shifting Tempo
Q. Mr Ciulla - I would be most grateful if you could advise me with the following problem:
I have a 1989 Ford Tempo (2.3 liter, manual transmission, 112,000 miles). Recently a new clutch (part: "10-81003 clutch") was fitted to the vehicle but there remains a serious problem.
When shifting in/out of 1st, 3rd & 5th gears everything is fine - but, I am experiencing great difficulty in shifting OUT of 2nd gear, 4th gear & Reverse gear: (the gear shift selector seems to "stick" and I have to hit the shift selector quite hard to shift OUT of those particular gears). Also, reverse gear is a little more difficult than usual to select, initially.
Could you please diagnose this situation and offer a remedy (remedies) for me to pass along to the repair shop, as the technician who installed the clutch is at a loss over this problem, which should be fixed at the earliest opportunity. Thank you for your kind assistance and may I hear from you asap.
Thank you very much indeed.
SusanA. The first thing I would check is the clutch cable. You need to be sure that it is completely disengaging the clutch when it is depressed. It is self adjusting but what you need to do is pull the clutch pedal up as far as it will go to release the self adjuster and then step on the clutch to adjust it.
If that doesn't help, then I would want to be sure the proper clutch was installed. The number you gave me doesn't help because it's an aftermarket part number. The correct Ford part number is: E5FZ7550A.
If that does not fix the problem, then the problem is internal to the transmission, probably worn synchronizers. That will require a rebuild to correct.
