Nissan Quest XE Codes 32 And 34

Q. I just purchased a used 1995 Nissan Quest XE with 104,700 miles on it. The owner has been having intermittent Check Engine Light. I did On Board Diagnostics and keep coming with 32 EGR solenoid and 34 Knock sensor. EGR/BPT hose has been replaced and EGR cleaned by the dealership.

I did removed both battery cables for almost two hours and it did not show up for a one day, then the next day it did show up, same trouble codes. All vacuum hoses connected, no cracked. EGR solenoid functioning okay. EGR valve okay. EGR Port/Orifice was cleaned by the dealership already. Check Engine Light comes on five miles after leaving the dealership.

Also, how do I adjust the parking brake?

  • Automatic transmission
  • 3.0 liter SOHC

A. Code 32 "EGR valve does not operate. (EGR valve spring does not lift.)" indicates a fault in the EGR valve or EGR control solenoid valve. They replaced the BPT vacuum hose because they have been breaking left and right. That's always the first thing I look for with a code 32 or P0400 in a Nissan.

If the EGR valve and EGR control solenoid are good, then the problem is in the wiring or the Powertrain Control Module. (PCM).

Code 34 "Knock Sensor Circuit" indicates the Knock Sensor (KS) is open or shorted and an abnormally high or low voltage has been detected. This can be caused by a bad KS or a problem in the wiring or connector.

To adjust the parking brake, handle type:

  1. Depress the brake pedal several times until clicking sound from the rear brakes stops.
  2. Ensure there is no drag when the parking brake pedal is released.
  3. Loosen the lock nut, then rotate the adjusting nut.
  4. Tighten the lock nut and the adjusting nut.
  5. Press down on the parking brake pedal using approximately 44 lbs. of force. The parking brake should be engaged when the pedal is depressed 5 to 7 notches.

To adjust the parking brake, foot type:

  1. Start the engine and depress the brake pedal several times while the vehicle is moving in reverse.
  2. Stop the engine.
  3. Turn the cable adjustment nut until the parking brake pedal stroke is 11-12 notches when depressed with a force of 196 N (44 lb).
