Ford Explorer Drivability Problems
Q. I have a 1994 Ford Explorer 6 cylinder 4.0 liter 4x4 with automatic transmission and Eddie Bauer package. It has 120,000 miles on the car with about 30,000 on a rebuilt motor.
When I drive for short periods there is not a problem. When I go on longer trips I will get a check engine light at about 60 miles and it will start to stutter. The check engine light will go on and off. I can still run it but it will progressively get worse if I don't let it rest for about 20 minutes. When I start it back up it is fine.
I have taken it to dealerships and they say that it has stored codes of lean and rich, but they can't figure it out because they can't get it to mess up for them. I have replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs recently. About a year ago I replaced the EGR sensor, Mass air flow, full fuel injector cleansing.
Do you know where I should start besides a throttle body cleaning. It sounds like another one of the sensors is going bad but I don't know what to do since nobody can figure it out.
Thank you so much for your help!
MikeA. A very common problem for this is a contaminated MAF sensor. Look at Ford Expedition P0171 & P0174 and I think this remedy will fix you right up.
And if you check, I think you'll find those codes in your PCM.
