Some Cheese With That Whine?

Q. Help! We own a 1994 Jeep Cherokee, about two weeks ago we replaced the water pump and the catalytic converter, now when the Jeep is driven it makes a low whining sound when the car is accelerating. Also, I put the car in park and gave it some gas and it did the same thing.

Do you know what is causing this? It was not doing this before we had the water pump and the Catalytic Converter replaced. We have owned the car since it was brand new, and have never experienced this problem before.

A. Well, if it started when the new water pump was put in, I would think it's a safe assumption the noise is coming from there. Look at the serpentine belt and make sure it is installed correctly and not hanging one rib off a pulley. Make sure the fan is installed correctly and not rubbing. Also check for any bolts that may have not been tightened. I have seen loose bolts come out and rub the water pump pulley. You can take the serpentine belt off and drive it. If the noise is gone, then it's definitely the water pump.
