Labor Guides

Q. Can you tell where, if available, I can look up labor repair estimates online? I have seen books and now probably CDs that repair shops use when they give a customer an estimate. It would be nice if there was a way for the consumer to put in the repair job and info about his auto and get about how many hours it would take.

I am specifically trying find the labor estimate for a "rack and pinion" replacement on a 1996 Ford AeroStar 3.0 liter engine, auto transmission.

Thanks for any info you can provide.

A. There are no free labor guides that I know of online, but at Alldata.com you can get a subscription to your make and model of car for about $20.00. It includes all the repair information,TSBs, part numbers and prices and labor times to do a particular job. I use it myself and I have found it to be an invaluable source of information.

The book estimates 2.7 hours to remove and replace the rack assembly in that car, assuming it is not All Wheel Drive.
