Honda Civic Flashing Too Fast

Q. Dear Mr. Ciulla, You come strongly recommended from a friend of mine. I have been having an annoying problem with my car for almost two years now and nobody seems to be able to help me, so I heard you are the man to contact. I drive a 1995 Honda Civic EX Coupe. A couple years ago I bought some clear lenses for my corner lights because I thought it added a nice clean look.

Honda Civic Flashing Too Fast

The manufacturer sent me a pair of single filament amber bulbs, 1156. I assumed these were the correct size and put them into my turn signals, despite having to struggle a little to put them in. They worked fine for a while, then started going haywire.

So I pulled them out and realized I need dual filament, 1157 bulbs. I put the correct bulbs in and noticed my lights blink very rapidly when I use my turn signal. I have replaced all the bulbs, front and back in the turn signals with bulbs of stock wattage and amperage ratings. I have also replaced the flasher located in my fuse box. Nothing has helped at all.

Another interesting thing is that my hazard flashers still operate at the correct speed, they seem completely unaffected by this. If you can shed some light on this problem, please help me out. I appreciate your time very much.

Sincerely,
Joe

A. The only thing I can think of that would cause this problem is if you added an additional bulb to the turn signals. so instead of having two bulbs per side, you would have three. Of if the bulbs were over 21 watts each.

If you are talking about the side marker light located on the front of the fender, that doesn't take either an 1156 or 1157. It takes a 156 bulb. The front parking/turn signal light takes an 1157 and the rear turn signal light takes an 1156.

If you have the correct number and types of bulbs, I would suggest trying the turn signal/hazard flasher, part number 38300SE3013, from a Honda dealer.
