Accord Spins Slow
Q. Dear Vincent, I am baffled by my Honda. Here are the specs:
1992 Honda Civic DX
4 cylinder
Automatic transmission
144,000 miles
Fuel Injection
No ABS brakes
P/S, A/C, no cruise
Rack and pinion steeringHere is how/when the problem started. Driving along and Engine died - no warning. Radio and A/C were running. Headlights were on. Here's the symptoms:
Engine turns over slowly but does not start. Electrical (radio, lights etc) works. Here's what I've done so far:
I have verified that there is spark. I have also cleaned and regapped the plugs, cleaned the battery terminals, starter terminals etc. I also verified that the fuel pump does pressurize the system when attempting to start the vehicle (also verified at the injector rail that there is fuel). Also put in new air filter. Verified fuses in fuse box are not blown. Vehicle has full tank of gas. What has been done to vehicle in last 3 months (car died before and dealer found bad igniter, cap and rotor):
New Battery.
New positive and negative battery cables.
New starter.
New igniter, cap and rotor.
New Air Filter
All belts and hosed replaced (including timing belt).
Changed Oil and Filter (twice)Roger
A. I guess the first thing I would do is a load test on the battery and see if it is any good. I know it's new, but you may have gotten a defective battery. A quick test would be to hook up a voltmeter to the battery and see how much the voltage drops while it is cranking. If it drops below about 9 to 9.5 volts, it's not supplying enough voltage to run the system.
I would also do a starter current draw test. If the starter is bad and drawing a ton of amps, that will suck the voltage the EFI system needs to operate.
