Questions and Answers

Vaulted Door

Q. Hi, I have a 1993 Grand Marquis with 55,000 miles on it, automatic transmission, Fuel Injection, ABS brakes, P/S - A/C - Cruise control, power windows and door locks but not keyless entry, except for the security system clicker.

The back driver's side door has vaulted shut. You cannot manually lift the lock, and the door won't open from the inside or outside. When I hit the unlock button, you can hear the mechanism in the door moving, but it doesn't unlock the door. Would you be able to help identify the problem? Thanking you in advance for your assistance.

Regards,
Mary Ann

A. It sounds like the link from the door lock motor to the door latch has fallen off and jammed it. Not an uncommon occurrence. The hardest part of the repair will be getting the door panel off, no easy feat if you can't open the door.

You can try to unlock the door with a slim jim and see if you can get the door open that way. If not then you'll have to get the door panel off, or at least enough to where you can flip the unlock mechanism manually.
