Ignition Switch

Q. 1995 GMC K 1500 V-8, 305, Automatic. Just recently as I was passing another vehicle. I put the truck into passing gear. Every thing was fine until I shut the truck off and re-started it. When I did I had no tach or speedometer and no first gear.

Then all of a sudden every thing came back. This happened twice that same day. But hasn't happened since. The dealer says that my ignition switch has a voltage drop across it. Their is a TSB out about it and it says to replace the e-prom. The dealer says " let's start with the switch and see if that does it." At $300.00 to replace it, I want to make sure that's it and not the e-prom. Have you heard of this happening? Also, where is this switch located in my truck? Is this something I can do myself? I do most of my own repairs.

Thank you,
Bob

A. I checked my TSB databases and I can't find what TSB he is referring to. That's not to say it doesn't exist, I just may not be listed.

If that was the only occurrence then I would tend to say not worry about it. Any repair you make now would be guess work and guess work can be expensive. The best kind of problem to fix is one that is able to be duplicated. This way when you do a repair it is easy to see if it's fixed the problem.

If the bulletin says it's the E-PROM and it's covered under warranty, then that should be done. It will not cost you or the dealer anything since GM will pay for it. Anything more then that and I would wait until the problem is more frequent and able to be duplicated.
