Pontiac Firebird Key Hard To Turn

Q. Hi, I just some quick questions regarding my car. I have a 1996 Pontiac Firebird, 6 cylinder, automatic transmission. The problem is that when I put the key in the ignition I have to play with it to get it to turn and when I go to shut the car off. I'm scared I'm going to break the key because it's so hard to turn.

Pontiac Firebird Key Hard To Turn

My question is: What exactly is wrong and How difficult of a fix would this be for someone who doesn't have a great deal of experience working on cars. Also, what would the cost be either way?

Thank you for your time,
Laurie

A. Check the key. Is it worn? Do you have a spare key? The key may need to be replaced or you may have a problem in the lock cylinder. That would mean you need a new lock cylinder which would also mean you will get two new keys with it. If there is a pellet in the key, you will need to get your parts at a dealer.
