Fan Missing Speeds

Q. I have a 1998 Malibu and the blower switch has 5 speeds. It does not work on position 1 or 2 but it does work normally on positions 3, 4 and 5????

A. Two things are possible here, first is the fan switch in the heater control panel and second, and more likely, the blower motor resistor.

The blower motor resistor is not difficult to replace. It is located in the bottom of the blower motor case and is held in by one little screw. Unplug the connector, take the screw out and pull out the resistor. Then just slap the new one in. I would try this first, it's cheap, quick and easy, and probably what's wrong.
