Questions and Answers

Wrong Flavor Fuel

Q. I have a 1985 Ford ¾ ton 4x4 pickup. Uses gas but diesel was put into one tank by mistake. Is there a drain plug? I've been under there and can't find one and can't get the siphon hose in far enough.

A. No, I'm afraid there is no drain plug on that gas tank. What you can do is to go under the truck and locate the line going from the tank to the metal fuel line. Disconnect it there and the fuel will drain out of the tank. It will be a little slow but the alternative is to drop the whole tank.

When the flow stops, reconnect the line and put in five gallons of gasoline. (I'm assuming you're doing this at home.) Then take it to a gas station and fill it up with gasoline. It may smoke a little bit, but this will stop with the second tank full.

There won't be any long term problems, gas engines can tolerate diesel fuel a lot better than diesel engines tolerate gasoline.
