Cherokee Laredo Differential Noise

Q. Hi, please could you help? I have a humming noise from the back of my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, 4.0 liter 6 cylinder. I have had the bearing changed but was told it could be the carrier bearing. Would it be cheaper to change that or could I just change the differential, or must I change all the axle?

Thanks,
Mike

Cherokee Laredo Differential Noise

A. There are three differentials used in that vehicle, a standard differential and two limited slip differentials, the RBI 194 axle and the RBI 216 axle. If it is the carrier bearing making the noise and not the gears, yes it can be replaced. If it is the gears making noise, the gear lash can be adjusted.

Overhauling a differential can be tricky. There are a number of special tools needed and calculations to be made to insure proper gear mesh. Honestly, if the noise is not objectionable, and the fluid level is right, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

If the noise is objectionable, then an overhaul or replacement is necessary. I usually go with a used rear end from a junk yard. I rarely have had problems with them. If you go the overhaul route, your Jeep dealer would be your best bet to do the work.
