Audi Catalytic Convertor And The MOT

Q. Mr Ciulla, I have a ;

  • 1991 Audi 100
  • 2000cc 4 cylinder
  • Manual transmission
  • 125,000 miles
I was wondering if you could advise me on whether or not I could take out the catalytic convertor and replace it with a straight through exhaust. If this is possible it would save me 300 pounds sterling!!!

Thank you for your time!
Regards,
Ricky

Audi Catalytic Convertor And The MOT

A. By saying you'll save 300 Pounds Sterling (about $500.00 US) I'm assuming you live in The United Kingdom.

I really can't advise you one way or the other. What you need to do is check the laws for your country and area. If you have an emission inspection, and I believe the MOT still checks emissions on gas and diesel engines, then you can not eliminate the catalytic converter because you will then fail the MOT.

A good indicator of weather a catalytic converter is required is if it comes with one brand new from the showroom, it is required. If the government did not require one, the auto makers would not put one on in the first place.
