Squeaking Lexus
Q. I've got a 1995 Lexus SC300, auto transmission, with 101,000 miles on it. It has over the past couple of months developed a pronounced squeak in the rear end, noticeable on curves and bumps primarily. I was told by one mechanic that it's one or more of the suspension bushings, and that it's a common problem.
Do you know if that's true, and if so what's the best course of action?
Thanks very much for your help,
LeeA. Squeaks can be a real pain to get rid of. It's not as common for bushings to develop a squeak as it once was due to improved bushing material, but it is still something that happens.
One way to deal with it is to drown the offending bushing with a penetrating lubricant and bouncing the car to help it get inside. This may take several applications over a period of time. Another way to do it is to take the bushing out and coating it with a lithium based grease or wheel bearing grease. Of course you can always replace the bushings.
Of course if the bushings are worn out, they will need to be replaced. Squeaks are usually not a big problem, but can be annoying as hell.
