Skylark Blower Motor

Q. Hi, I just got a 1970 Skylark with a 2 bbl Buick 350 with 35,000 miles on it for my first car. The blower motor went out the other day and I can't find it. Someone told me it was in the right front fender. I would like to know where it is before I start taking body parts off.

It also makes a squeaking sound when I go over bumps it sounds like it's coming from under the car. I just had the shocks replaced, so I was wondering if you thought it was anything serious.

A. That's a very nice first car indeed.

The blower motor is in back of the right front inner fender well. The way we used to replace them was to cut a round hole about 12" in the inner fender well and replace the blower motor. Then we cut a round piece of sheet metal about two inches larger than the hole we cut and drilled four holes to fasten it to the fender well to cover the hole we made. We did a little pounding with a hammer to get it to conform with the contours of the fender well and screwed it down. Some spray undercoat was used to seal the cover and waterproof it.

If you look down in between the firewall where the blower motor is and the fender, you'll see where you need to cut the hole. The alternative is to remove the fender.

The creaking you hear is very likely the upper control arm bushings. The years have dried them out and cause them to squeak like crazy. Ford had a good idea by having grease fittings to allow greasing, but GM did not do this. There's two things you can do, spray the hell out of them with something like WD 40, CRC 5-56 or Liquid Wrench. It will take a few applications over a few days, but most of the squeak will come out. The other thing is to replace them. A difficult job at best.
