Celica Vacuum Leak

Q. I recently bought an 1986 Toyota Celica GTS with a 2.0 Liter DOHC 16 valve engine, 5 speed transmission and 141,000 miles. The engine was recently rebuilt but I cannot get a hold of the person who did it to find how long ago. The dealer told me the rings weren't broke in yet and I believe him. My problem is the car will barely idle, when it does it is extremely rough.

When I'm driving it, it will just quit and won't start for at least two minutes. There is a pronounced sucking sound coming from around the intake and injectors and when I spray starter fluid in the area the motor revs up. The intake gasket looks good and there is no loose vacuum lines or open ports. I'm guessing it could be a cracked intake manifold but what are the chances that the air could be getting in around the injectors? Will the engine running lean like that cause it to die will driving?

A. You definitely have a vacuum leak somewhere. There are sealing "O" rings around the injector base and if the injectors are removed for any reason, they need to be replaced. Not only do they seal the manifold around the injector, they hold the injectors in place. So that can be a cause of the vacuum leak.

It is also possible the intake manifold gasket was installed wrong causing the leak as well as a cracked manifold. I would try replacing the "O" rings first and if that doesn't help, the manifold will likely have to come off.
