Ford Bronco Drive Line Clunking

Q. Hello, I have a 1996 Ford Bronco with an automatic transmission. It has a 5.8 liter V-8 and A/C with rear ABS and is fuel injected. I purchased it recently and noticed that when I accelerate from a stop or slow to a stop that the rear-end makes a "clunk" sound near the rear axle and drive line area.

The noise and slight vibration is momentary and the Bronco shifts fine at all other speeds and is problem free. I took it to a mechanic and he said after test driving it and inspecting it that the problem is called "over-ride" and that it is the shift in weight from the suspension/frame causing strain on the drive line.

I have considered putting heavy duty shocks on the rear end for more support and have not yet taken it to a Ford dealership for a second opinion. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott

A. I think it this case I would go for that second opinion. The "over-ride" explanation just doesn't cut it with me. I would be more inclined to think it is play in the rear differential or a bad universal joint.
