Pathfinder Needs Some A/C Work

Q. 1996 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4. I just had my Pathfinder in for an A/C check. The A/C seems to work fine when I am driving, but does not cool when at idle. The dealership told me I need the expansion valve and dryer replaced. The estimate for repair is $434.00.

Are these items that could be installed (even with some effort) by a person mechanically inclined, but not mechanically knowledgeable? And if so, is there a repair manual that you would recommend for this vehicle/repair?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide!
Jed

A. Most service manuals will not include information on replacing A/C components due to the risk of personal injury and the legal ramifications of servicing these components without proper EPA certifications.

Before you do anything, you will need to have the system completely drained of freon. Then it's just a matter of replacing the receiver/drier and Expansion valve. When you replace the parts, use new O rings and coat them with some refrigerant oil of a shot of silicone spray.
