Jeep Grand Cherokee Fuel Sending Unit
Q. When having the car I was buying, 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee, checked out by a mechanic, he mentioned that the fuel level unit was registering high voltage. We have seen the evidence in an erratic gas gauge. I found the fuel level sending unit (sans fuel pump) and am ready to replace it.
You mentioned in your fuel pump replacement article that you could advise as to whether there was an access panel that could be used instead of dropping the tank. Is there? I'm fairly adept at lightweight auto repair, but is there anything special I should know. I printed out the article on replacing the fuel pump for reference.
A. This does not have an access panel. You have to drop the fuel tank to replace the sending unit. And if I may make a suggestion, if it has 90,000 to 100,000 miles on it, it might be a good idea to consider replacing the fuel pump while you're at it.
