Diesel In The Gas

Q. Vincent, To make a long story short, my Dad poured about 5 gallons of diesel in his gas tank. 1986 Toyota Van. There is no other name on the van that he could see. My question is... Do they not make a plug on a gas tank to drain? If not what can we do? Please advise!!

Thanks for your time,
Debra

A. I don't remember if there is a drain on that particular gas tank or not. If there is you will see it right off. it's either a 14 or 22 mm plug on the bottom of the tank. You can't miss it.

If you don't see it, you will have to siphon the fuel out through the filler. You can get a siphon setup from an auto parts store. Do not use one of those pumps that hook up to an electric drill. The sparks inside the drill could set off the gas fumes and result in a very large explosion. That could ruin your whole day.

Let me ask you this, why was he putting, what he thought, gas into the tank? If he ran out then I would suggest filling the tank the rest of the way with gasoline and driving it. That tank holds 16 gallons and the diesel will be diluted enough to let the engine run. It might smoke a bit and may run a little rough, but it won't cause any engine damage.
