Grand Am Intermittent High Idle
Q. Hi Vince, I have a 1995 Pontiac Grand Am sports edition with 85,000 miles on it. Power steering, A/C, ABS, fuel injected four cylinder. I think that's everything you need.
My Grand Am runs great - I really love it, but my question is with the idle. Sometime it runs about 1,500 rpm's when normally it runs at 1,000 rpm's. It started ½ year ago in December then stopped, and now since June it idles high again but not all the time. It doesn't matter if I'm on the highway or not or if I run the A/C or not.
I brought it in to my garage (dealership) where I bought it, and they said after putting it through some tests everything checks out - nothing is wrong.
So, why does the idle shoot up to 1,500 rpm's once in a while. I don't think this is normal because it never did it before. I bought the car in the year 2000.
Thank you,
DonA. Did the dealer ever get the idle to act up? Unless it does it for someone besides you, it's hard to determine what the problem is. They can scan it all day but if problem is not there, anything would be just a guess. It could be an intermittent vacuum leak, sticking idle air control valve, sticking throttle cable. Is the , floor mat getting in the gas pedal?
