Accord Code 12 Problem
Q. Dear Mr. Ciulla: I have a 1987 Honda Accord LX-i, fuel-injection, 2.0 Liter 4 cylinder and automatic transmission. After the vehicle is operated for approximately 10-15 minutes, the PGM-FI light comes on and sets a error code of #12. This error code is from my diagnose as refer to the Chilton repair service manual, and it indicates the problem with the EGR system.
However, it doesn't specific whether it's the EGR Valve, EGR lift sensor, or some other components, I don't know which one to replace and the EGR valve.
Another symptom that seems to be associated with this EGR problem is when ever this light comes on, the vehicle's idle rpm drops significantly. For example, when the radiator fans turn on or when the A/C is running, the idle drops almost to the bottom. Does the EGR problem has anything to do with the engine's idle rpm?
I also have a problem with the transmission of my vehicle. As I drive, the engine rev up between gears when it tries to go from the second gear to the third, but doesn't go in. After 15 minutes of driving, the problem seems to get better, it will gear up, but the engine still rev up between gears. Do I need to replace the transmission? Or is there something I can do to fix it? What is "Transmission Overhaul"?
Thank you very much in advance and wish you the best luck in future!
Sincerely,
Kin LeungA. The code 12 does refer to the EGR system as a whole, but it can not pin point it to a specific component of the system. Basically it just puts you in the ball park. From there you have to test the individual components to determine which one is faulty.
I would give you the test procedure, but it is several pages long. However the Chilton manual you have does contain the test procedure. The low idle may be related to the EGR problem. Once you troubleshoot that system the idle problem should clear up as well. If not, then we can start looking for another problem elsewhere.
As for the transmission problem, I would suggest a transmission fluid and filter replacement first. You may just have a clogged transmission filter and replacing it will fix the problem. If that doesn't fix it, then the problem is inside the transmission itself. Either a defective governor valve or defective 2-3 shift valve.
A transmission overhaul is a complete tear down of the transmission and replacing of all bad or defective parts and replacing the clutch drive and driven plates..
