Taurus Door Switch

Q. I have a: 1997 Taurus, 3.0 Liter, Fuel Injected, Automatic, A/C & ABS, 52,000 miles. My door ajar light comes on occasionally and stays on. When this happens, the dome light and courtesy light stay on. You can not lock the Driver Side door (which indicates that the defective switch is in this door).

This happens only after starting the car up. It does not come on when driving. At first the dealer said it was the cold weather (Wisconsin--January). But is still occurring even in dry weather. I bought a new switch, but can not find the location in my Chilton's Manual. Can you help with locating where this switch is located and how to remove/replace it?

Thanks,
Dennis

A. I must admit I'm a little confused here. The door ajar switch is retained by a plastic locking tab located in the lower portion of the door latch. However, if this is bad it would not effect the ability to lock and unlock the door.

The lock cylinder has an Anti-Theft switch attached to it. It is possible that this is bad. If this is the case you'll have to remove the door panel and see if it is the switch or the lock cylinder. I think this is the more likely possibility.

If you have the Chilton Ford Taurus/Sable manual 26702, it's on page 10-9.
