Oldsmobile 88 Runs Rough And Vibrates

Q. Hi: I am getting a little frustrated maybe you can help me. I recently bought a 1989 Oldsmobile 88. 2.8 liter fuel injected engine with 86,000 miles. The engine runs rough, excessive vibration, more noticeable at idle, acceleration and hills. It smooths out after highway driving for about 45 minutes.

More often than not when first starting the first turn of the key it will turn over but not start, second turn it starts right up. I have changed the oil/filter, plugs, wires, O2 sensor, PCV, air filter, fuel filter, swapped air mass flow sensor and EGR valve.

I have eliminated a clogged exhaust by temporarily disconnecting before the catalytic converter. Also ran a bottle of fuel injector cleaner. I am getting no trouble codes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Eric

A. Check the fuel pressure and put a vacuum gauge on it to see what idle vacuum is. Has the ECM been replaced? How's the compression? Maybe it's dropping a cylinder or two? Possibly a bad ignition module or coil?
