Paint Protection

Q. Dear Vincent, I have a 1992 Lexus ES300 - sort of Metallic Green finish. While the paint has retained its shine, the whole surface has got scratches with time. I tried one of those scratch rub off creams, and it works well - however, since I figure I'm going to keep the car for 1-2 years more tops, I might as well apply one of those clear coat finishes to it.

Some time ago, I saw a TV infomercial that advertised a finish that completely coats a car - pretty much removes scratches, etc. and covers it in a coating that is even fire resistant.

My questions:
1. Would you recommend I use one of these finishes to this car?
2. If so, what type would you recommend?
3. Are there any brands you could indicate?
4. Doing some research on the internet, I found one brand called "Toughguard". What is your opinion of this?

Sincerely,
Hubert

Dave

A. I'm not going to go into why you no longer see that particular infomercial on TV. Suffice it to say the Federal Trade Commission did it's job well.

These products that remove scratches actually fill in the scratches with, usually, a silicone type material. You, usually, then need to apply a coat of wax to bring the shine back up

There are a lot of products that claim they offer the best protection for your cars finish, and they may do just that. I have always used Turtle Wax Carnauba on all my cars and I have been very happy with how it protects the finish on my cars over the years.

There is a company called Ming that offers a paint protection package that is guaranteed by the company. I have never had any personal experience with this company, but I do have a friend who had the package applied and he seems happy with it.

For me, I apply Turtle Wax to my cars in the spring and fall and my cars still look and shine like new.
