Replacing Air Filter

Q. I am looking at removing my factory air box and installing a K&N air filter. I would like to move the air filter to the other side of the engine bay while I'm at it. The question I have is "How short can I make the tube from the air filter?"

I want to cut it off right about where it stops pointing up and starts to travel horizontally, then I can point the air filter towards the front of the Jeep and keep it on the driver side of the engine. The small tube from about halfway up (vacuum?) would be relocated to halfway up what was left. What would be the downsides of this and how can I fix them?

1998 Jeep TJ (Wrangler)
4.0 liter 6 cylinder
5 speed manual
Air conditioning
Power steering and brakes (NO ABS)
Fuel injected
No cruise control

Thanks for any help,
Chris

A. I don't see any reason why you can't do what you have in mind. I don't think you will gain anything by it, but it should work without any problems.
