Ford F150 Brake Grabbing Problem

Q. Hi, I have a 1999 Ford F150 4x4 5.4 liter V-8, with 130,000 miles, automatic transmission and ABS brakes. The problem I'm having is it seems after driving for awhile, highway, when I stop and go into reverse the truck seems to hesitate as if the brakes were on, then it will occur going forward.

Also it seems to happen as I turn up a hill. There seems to be a soft choppy chunky noise coming from the rear. I thought maybe the brakes had worn so thin they were warping and binding against the disk but they still have about an 1/8" of pad left. Could this be the differential or transmission? The transmission fluid has been changed and filter replaced about six months ago. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time,
Bob

A. 1/8" is pretty thin. Discard is about 1/32" so it's pretty close.

Since you are so close, I would replace the brake shoes with Ford brake shoes, part number F85Z-2200-AA. These are a countermeasure part and should resolve the problem.

I would also recommend doing a brake fluid flush and fill at the same time. It's five years old and I'll bet it's never been done.
