Questions and Answers
When cruising around 80-100 kph (in overdrive with the torque converter locked), revs around 1600-1900 - if you go up a hill or gently press on the gas the revs bounce around between 1500 to 2500 and it feels as if the transmission is resisting the kick down - however, when you mash the gas, it doesn't hesitate at all. I have taken it to my local GM dealer and they said this is a common problem with this transmission and it is because the torque converter gets stuck.
Regal Torque Converter Problem
Q. Hi, I have a 1997.5 Regal GS with the series 2 supercharged 3.8 liter V-6 and the beefed up automatic transmission. It has 96,000 kilometers on it, with extended warranty until 132,000 kilometers. Its fully loaded, auto A/C, cruise & power everything. My question is about the transmission, which I understand is electronically controlled.
They suggest tapping the brakes or pressing the gas harder to disengage the lock up - this I don't buy! I had a 1990 Bonneville SSE that had the same problem, and it was a matter of adjusting the "Detent Pressure", this however is not applicable to an electronic transmission.
Do you know of any adjustment to do???? Or some way of fixing it, as it gets very irritating on long drives.
Thanks,
ClaytonA. According to GMs "Torque Converter Replacement Guidelines", Bulletin Number: 01-07-30-010, issued March, 2001, this problem requires the torque converter be replaced, unless DTC code P0742 is stored in the PCM, or the transmission fluid has an odor or is discolored but no evidence of metal contamination. It should be replaced if the vehicle has TCC shudder and/or no TCC apply.
So at this point I would do a transmission flush and filter replacement. If that does not clear up the problem then the torque converter will need to be replaced.
