Volkswagen Jetta Foaming

Q. Mr. Ciulla, I'm wondering if you can tell me what foam on the inside of the oil cap means. I have a 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, 31,000 miles. Doesn't appear coolant is leaking into engine. In doing some checking around the Internet, found that on motorcycles with aluminum cases, foam could be condensation. Especially in the cold weather.

Volkswagen Jetta Foaming

I live in northern Illinois. Could this be the problem with the Jetta?

Any help you can provide would be great.
Chris

A. Usually this is a sign of a bad PCV valve. It is not uncommon to see this in the northern part of the country, especially with cars that don't get driven for any great distance. I would just put a new PCV valve in and that should take care of it.
