Nissan Pathfinder Pulling Right

Q. I recently bought a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder with 80,000 miles on it. I've noticed a slight pull to the right, and I asked the dealer about this, but they said it was a 'crown' in the road, and the vehicle was perfectly aligned. I didn't believe them, but I bought it anyway, because I felt it was not a serious concern.

I now see that the left rear wheel seems to have more clearance in the wheel well. It rides about two inches higher for this wheel. Also, there is a switch that adjust the variable air suspension for "sport" or "comfort". I believe that three are stuck on comfort and the left rear is on sport.

When I hit the switch, I can hear a clicking sound (probably a solenoid opening/closing). Where is this coming from? Can you tell me how this feature works, basically. Is this problem an explanation for the slight pull to the right??

Also it has an aftermarket warranty that should cover everything that's not considered maintenance. I would prefer to do it myself if it is something simple.

A. This suspension system uses a shock absorber select switch, control unit, shock absorber sensors and control motors to control shock absorber valving. The system allows the driver to select the shock absorber valving that is suitable for various driving conditions. Basically there is a small motor on top of each shock absorber that turns a valve inside the shock absorber.

Normally this will not effect the ride height of the vehicle. The system is silent for the most part. You really have to have your ear on top of the shock to hear anything. If you are hearing a noise, it must be coming from one of the four shock absorbers. I would listen to each one and see which one is making the noise. That is the one that is probably bad. If you go to replace them, go to a nissan dealer and take one of the old ones with you so the parts guy can get you the proper parts.

After you get the shock absorbers straightened out, then get it aligned and have the ride height adjusted if necessary.

A slight pull to the right is normal due to road crown. But that can be compensated for when the alignment is done if it is really bothersome.
